Criterion Ventures envisions a world in which the assets of the American Christian churches are integrally linked to the innovations of the social capital markets. By envisioning churches as an economic being and the parish (defined geographically) as a living economy, the church can be fundamentally revitalized and rooted in the community through the stewardship of that local living economy. Components to this work include building momentum among the right leaders, developing the right strategy for promotion, engagement, mapping, and partnerships

The outcomes may include substantial messaging, policy change, increased activity among congregations, bridges between social capital markets and the world of church, and churches engaged fully as just economic actors. Many partners, from seminaries to venture funds, from lawyers to denominational leaders have stepped forward to play essential roles.

We will gain broader reach and build a community for the movement through a Convergence in Simsbury, Connecticut March 19-21, 2012. This Convergence will keep the creative energy of past Convergences but will have a guided focus on church as economic being. This will be the initial and defining event in a long-term movement. This Convergence will be an opportunity to evaluate and discuss the requisite tools for church to fulfill its intended calling as an actor in the world economy while building partnerships that are certain to generate new economic models.
